Urban effluents

The discharge of untreated urban wastewater effluents on natural riverbed causes a number of negative effects, among which we could include:

  • Appearance of floatings and sludges: it causes an unpleasant visual impact and it releases bad odors.
  • Exhaustion of the oxygen content in the water: disastrous influence on the development of aquatic life.
  • Excessive nutrient inputs: responsible of the uncontrolled growth of algae and other plants in the receiving streams (eutrophication).
  • Damage to public health: spreading of pathogens to humans (viruses, bacteria, protozoa and helminths).

Thanks to the innovative technique of ceramic biofiltration TECAMBYOT’s BIOFILCER, a new door is opened in the field of treatment of urban effluents, drastically reducing the pollutant loads from these wastewater and allowing they to be subsequently treated in a conventional wastewater treatment plant as a standard urban effluent, favoring so the compliance with the current European regulations for the effluents disposal.

A new technology for effluent treatment

The usual activated sludge technology suffers from high investment costs and some operational and maintenance difficulties, so that if there are temporarily some unfavourable conditions, the microbial medium located into the reactor loses all its properties, and it could even die.

An alternative to activated sludge systems are biological filters or biofilters, which uses natural processes for water treatment: Biofilters have proven to be an appropriate technology for treating domestic and food processing wastewater with a high organic load and they can guarantee that the quality of the discharged water is optimal.

Therefore, TECAMBYOT has decided to develop a highly innovative system of Biofiltration, BIOFILCER, used for the first time in the sector of ceramic materials.

Advantages of biofiltration technology

  • Rapid growth of the biofilm → Great flexibility towards to variable pollutant loads and it provides stability into the process.
  • It supports the entry of very high pollutant loads → Lower space requirements for biological treatment.
  • The washings of biofilm are controlled and are voluntary.
  • The modular nature of the process, which allows to easily fit several stages with different objectives.
  • Easy adaptation to already existing treatment plants which need a refurbishment due to overloads or to adapt discharges to the new laws.
  • Reduced sludge production, in the meantime, bulking effects disappear.
  • Minimizing noise, odors and visual impacts, as its low space requirement allows to be covered, or even, having an underground location.
  • Tratment cost lower than €1 per m3.
  • Operating costs below €50 per month.

What does the technology used in biofilcer consist of?

BIOFILCER is a system formed by a ceramic filter with high surface and density, which is covered by a film of water-treatment organisms, through which the wastewater flows.

While the organisms are growing, the film thickness increases, the deepest film enters into an endogenous growth phase, from which it loses its ability to adhere to the surface of the filling, so that the film is released and begins to grow a new one. The film is thus removed and washed away by the water flow, and it is collected on top. The system requires a co-current flow.

system components

  • Feeding Pump
  • Biological Treatment: A 500 mm diameter Biofilter with a 2m height protective cover against terrain charges; a 1.5m height ceramic filling and ceramic membranes for oxygenation (optional).
  • Two GRP tanks of 1000 liters, one for decanting and system protection and the other one to storage the clean water.
  • Washing/Flushing automatic equipment comprising three solenoid controllers.
  • 1kW compressed air equipment with a 25l storage tank-
  • Measurement and control equipment. Pipes. Electrical panel and its connections.
  • Optional: Operation via 1500 Watt Solar Panel

The wastewater treated by ceramic biofiltration fulfills all the requirements to be discharged into the municipal sewer or to be discharged into a natural channel.
